How much life insurance do you need?

A planning tool and the underlying logic: how many income years to consider, debt load, education expenses, and current benefits.

A standard approach sums what your income could pay for and subtracts existing protections. Precision isn't critical since term policies come in round-dollar steps and the goal is simply keeping your household secure during critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = (income × years) + debts + education costs − existing coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This gives you a starting figure, not definitive guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Planners typically suggest 10–20 years, but this varies based on how long dependents need financial support. Buena Park households with young kids usually gravitate toward longer terms, since expenses for childcare, housing, and schools overlap.

Debts. The biggest debt for most people is the mortgage. If coverage is large enough to pay off the mortgage, loved ones can choose their own path forward instead of being pressured by financial necessity.

Education. Budget per child based on current dollars. Adding it now keeps you from needing to buy extra policies down the road.

Current coverage. This includes savings available for an emergency and workplace life insurance. Since group coverage typically ends if you leave your job, many people only count part of it.

Once you've determined your target amount, use the quote tool to find the monthly payment across 10–30 year terms at each carrier. Picking an amount higher than your calculation is common because the monthly cost difference is modest when you're young.
